Comparing The Demographics Of Different Social Media Platforms

Social media is a changing landscape because there are different demographics of users on each platform, and the way that people use social media is constantly evolving. In this article, you will learn about the differences in social media demographics by comparing each of them.

Facebook

Facebook remains to be the most popular social media platform in the world, with over 1.5 billion active users. While it’s not as open to new users as some other platforms (you have to be at least 13 years old), it’s still accessible to everyone who wants it and offers a wide range of options for connecting with people from all over the globe.

In terms of demographics, Facebook users tend to be older than 18 years old, the average age is 31 years old and female. 69% of all Facebook accounts belong to women. The majority of these are white Americans, who represent 59% of American adults online but make up 71% of active Facebook users.

Instagram

Instagram is the most popular social media platform among millennials, with 85% of users between the ages of 18 and 29. It also has a largely female audience (66%) and a college-educated audience (53%). It has a large urban audience: 43% of U.S. adults who live in urban areas use Instagram, compared with only 26% who live in rural areas.

Aside from that, African Americans are more likely than other racial or ethnic groups to use Instagram: 28% have done so at least once in their lives, compared with 15% for whites, 16% for Hispanics/Latinos, and 14% for Asian Americans.

Pinterest

Pinterest is the most popular photo-sharing social media site among women, and it’s also the only platform where those with higher education are more likely than those with lower education to use it. The platform skews toward users who have children and/or higher incomes, and its users tend to be older.

In terms of social media demographics, Pinterest is also notable in that its audience is significantly more diverse than other social media sites; 45% of Pinterest’s users are nonwhite, compared with just 32% on Facebook (and even less on Instagram).

Twitter

Lastly, Twitter is used by people aged 18-29 and has an average income of $68,000. Twitter users tend to be more educated than the general population (57% have a college degree), with women making up 60% of all Twitter users in the U.S. Twitter is most popular among married couples, with 41% being married couples who use Twitter together.
